Why Mauritius is a Hidden Gem for Vegan Travelers
If you love beautiful beaches, friendly people, and tasty vegan food, Mauritius is calling your name! This little island in the Indian Ocean is full of surprises. From its stunning nature to its colorful cultures, it has something for every traveler—especially if you’re into plant-based living.
Meet Heather: Championing Veganism in Mauritius
Heather Drummond is a vegan hero living in Mauritius. Originally from Zimbabwe, Heather moved to Mauritius over ten years ago with her family. She saw a big need for better vegan food options in hotels and restaurants, so she started Ecoshe. Ecoshe helps train chefs and hotel staff to create delicious vegan meals. Heather is also an Ambassador for the Plant Based Treaty and works hard to make travel in Mauritius kinder to animals and the planet.
A Cultural and Culinary Melting Pot
Mauritius is home to people from Indian, Chinese, African, and European backgrounds. This mix of cultures creates amazing food—many dishes are naturally vegan! Some local favorites include dhal puris (a type of flatbread filled with split peas) and gateau piment (spicy lentil fritters). You’ll also find delicious tofu and mushroom dishes inspired by Chinese cuisine.
The Evolution of Vegan-Friendly Hospitality
When Heather first arrived, it was hard to find good vegan meals at nice hotels. So she created Ecoshe to change that. Today, many vegan-friendly hotels in Mauritius now offer better choices thanks to her work. Whether you’re staying at a luxury resort or a boutique hotel, you can now enjoy thoughtful vegan dining experiences.
Eco-Friendly and Ethical Tourism in Mauritius
Vegan travel in Mauritius isn’t just about food—it’s about making kind choices. The island offers lots of ethical tourism options. You can help plant trees, join reef conservation projects, or even adopt a street dog! Heather says, “We’re always saying, eat plants, plant trees.”
How Vegan Travel in Mauritius is Growing
With Heather leading the way, plant-based tourism in Mauritius is growing fast. Her non-profit has even created an app to help people learn about veganism in a gentle, friendly way. The future looks bright with more vegan restaurants in Mauritius, wellness retreats, and local vegan product makers popping up all over the island.
