Exploring Bulgaria: A Hidden Gem for Vegan Travelers
In a very special episode of The World Vegan Travel Podcast, host Brighde chats with Valeria Hogg, the kind and inspiring woman behind Heritage Tours Bulgaria. If you’ve never thought of Bulgaria as a place for plant-based travel, this episode—and this blog—might change your mind!
Why Bulgaria is a Hidden Gem for Vegan Travelers
Bulgaria is a beautiful country in Eastern Europe filled with mountains, beaches, and ancient traditions. It might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of vegan travel, but that’s exactly why it’s such a hidden treasure! Valeria shares how this country is full of surprises for travelers who care about animals, the planet, and delicious food. With its mix of nature, history, and kindness, Bulgaria is quickly becoming a must-visit spot for vegan-friendly travel.
Valeria’s Vegan B&B: A Cozy Bulgarian Retreat
Valeria runs a small vegan bed-and-breakfast and restaurant in the Bulgarian countryside called Guesthouse Heritage. Just a short trip from Sofia, her guesthouse is peaceful, personal, and full of love. It only fits 10 guests at a time, so it feels just like home. Everything is done with care—from the traditional Bulgarian architecture to the fully plant-based meals.
Valeria became vegan for health reasons and started making the same meals she eats for her guests. Over time, this turned into a beautiful little business where travelers from all over the world can relax, eat well, and experience real Bulgarian culture.
Exploring Bulgaria Through Vegan Tours & Cultural Festivals
Valeria doesn’t just offer a place to sleep—she also organizes vegan-friendly guided tours in Bulgaria. From day trips to special multi-day journeys, her tours include magical experiences like:
- Picking roses during the Rose Festival in Bulgaria
- Hiking during the Summer Solstice, when herbs are believed to be the most powerful
- Learning about ancient traditions that connect nature, spirit, and community
Her tours help travelers discover the heart of Bulgaria in a way that’s gentle on the earth and full of wonder.
Traditional Bulgarian Cuisine: Naturally Vegan Dishes
One of the coolest things about Bulgaria? A lot of its traditional food is naturally vegan or easy to make vegan! Valeria talks about dishes like fresh tomato salads, bean stews, and grilled vegetables that use local ingredients grown with care.
“The tomatoes here, I would say, they taste like nowhere,” Valeria says. And we believe her! The focus on seasonal, fresh veggies makes Bulgarian cuisine a dream for anyone eating plant-based.

Valeria helps travelers discover this diverse land through eco-friendly tours that celebrate the outdoors. Whether you love nature, history, or just relaxing in beautiful places, Bulgaria has something for you.
Sustainable Travel & Ethical Tourism in Bulgaria
More and more people are choosing to travel in a way that’s kind to animals, good for local communities, and gentle on the environment. Valeria’s work with Heritage Tours Bulgaria is a shining example of what sustainable travel in Bulgaria can look like.
