COMING SOON: Mount Kilimanjaro: Vegan Trekking & Wildlife Safari Adventure (2026)

We're going to Rwanda!

Embark on an Unparalleled Journey: Rwanda, A Luxury Wildlife & Culinary Extravaganza

Get ready for the trip of a lifetime as we head to one of our all-time favorite destinations, Rwanda! This journey is a bucket-list dream come true, packed with wildlife, culture, luxury, and jaw-dropping scenery—all wrapped in an incredible, fully WFPB SOS-free plant-based experience.

You’re not just going on vacation. You’re diving headfirst into a real-life National Geographic episode, but with way better food and seriously comfy beds.  It’s your chance to visit with the rare and magnificent mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, a privilege few are granted. Picture yourself standing in the mist-shrouded forests of Volcanoes National Park, observing these gentle giants, a moment of profound connection with the natural world.

This isn’t your average tour. It’s that pinch-me-is-this-real adventure you’ve always dreamed of!

The Experience: The Best of Rwanda

The world is slowly discovering that Rwanda has it all: it’s safeclean, and its progressive environment makes it a perfect destination for sustainable tourism.

Our journey will begin in the capital Kigali, a city that gracefully balances its rich history with a forward-thinking spirit. From there, we venture into the lush, ancient rainforest of Nyungwe National Park, where the enchanting world of chimpanzees awaits. We will then journey to the serene shores of Lake Kivu, one of Africa’s Great Lakes with majestic scenery, before the grand finale in Volcanoes National Park.

Here, you will come face-to-face with mountain gorillas, arguably one of the rarest and most profound wildlife encounters on Earth. As an extra bonus, we will track the playful and rare Golden Monkeys, which are endemic to these volcanic mountains, adding yet another unforgettable moment to your adventure

The Journey: A Deep Cultural Immersion

While the primates are the icons, the culture is the soul of this trip.

  • The Soul of Rwanda: From the rhythmic beauty of traditional Intore dancing to a moving visit to the Genocide Memorials and an intimate neighborhood walk in Kigali, you will feel the heartbeat of this resilient nation.

  • Umuganda: You have the rare privilege of participating in Umuganda —Rwanda’s mandatory community work day. This is not a tourist show; it is a transformative moment of connection with locals that stays with you forever.

  • Constant Companions: Our local driver-guides are the best in the business. They are not just drivers; they are storytellers and cultural ambassadors who will be with us every step of the way.

NHA Compliance, Perfected

For the SOS-free traveler, travel often means compromise. Not here. Wanda Huberman, Executive Director of the NHA, has personally coordinated with executive chefs to ensure:

  • 100% WFPB & SOS-Free: No oil. No sugar. No salt.  All incredibly delicious!

  • Gourmet Execution: Experience culinary alchemy where fresh, local produce is transformed into exquisite masterpieces.

The Sanctuaries: One&Only

Finally, To justify this “trip of a lifetime,” we have secured stays at two of the most exclusive properties on Earth.

One&Only Nyungwe House: Suspended among tea plantations and ancient rainforest, this is the perfect gateway to Chimpanzees, plus Colobus monkeys, Vervet monkeys, and baboons. If you are a birder, over 400 species are waiting for you!

One&Only Gorilla’s Nest: This may very well be the most amazing property you ever visit. Imagine a private lodge you won’t want to leave, impeccable service, and refined design nestled in the jungle. This is the pinnacle of luxury—and we are there for 3 incredible nights.

ADD-ON: AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK
Want more? Extend your Rwanda adventure with a luxurious pre-trip safari to Akagera National Park.

The Experience in Brief:  Before our main journey begins, immerse yourself in Rwanda’s ultimate conservation miracle. Akagera National Park is a savannah paradise that has risen from the ashes to become a sanctuary for the Big 5 (Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo), plus graceful Masai giraffes, zebras, topis, and impalas.

  • Exclusivity: This add-on is strictly limited to 7 rooms (14 guests max) to ensure an intimate experience.

Your Home: Wilderness Magashi Camp

Perched like butterflies on the lake’s edge, Magashi is the only exclusive-use area in Akagera, meaning we have 15,000 acres of wilderness entirely to ourselves. This is not just a camp; it is a 5-star sanctuary of airy tented suites, Rwandan-inspired design, and complete solar power. Between game drives, you can cool off in the pool while watching elephants drink at the shore, or gather around the roaring fire pit to share stories of the day’s sightings.

Because we are staying right on the shores of Lake Rwanyakazinga, the wildlife comes to us. Expect to see hippos splashing from your private deck during the day, and—since they graze on the lawn at night—you will likely fall asleep to their low, rhythmic grunts under a star-filled sky.

From the moment I arrived at the Kigali Marriott until the moment I left Kigali, it was incredible. The accommodations, food and adventures were definitely top-notch. We were able to see gorillas, chimpanzees, golden monkeys, and so much more. We had a beautiful day participating in Umuganda, planting trees, and dancing with the lovely people in Gisenyi, Rwanda.

Is this trip for me?
This adventure is a significant investment of time and money. We want to ensure it is the perfect fit for you. Below are some important notes regarding the trip, and we do invite you to email us if you have any further questions before signing up.

HOW FIT DO I NEED TO BE?

Honest Assessment: Moderate to Active. You do not need to be an Olympic athlete, but you should be comfortable walking for several hours on uneven terrain. The treks can take anywhere from 2 to 5 hours depending on where the wildlife families are located that day.

  • The Terrain: Expect mud, slippery slopes, and thick vegetation.

  • The Altitude: We will be trekking at elevations between 2,500m and 3,000m (8,200–9,800 ft), though mostly at the lower end of that range. If you have serious knee or back issues, please consult us before booking.

  • The Help (A Game-Changer): We include personal porters for every guest on every trek. They will carry your backpack and offer a hand (or a push!) when the going gets steep. They make a world of difference!

WHAT'S THE TREKKING REALLY LIKE?

This is a true jungle adventure, not a zoo visit. We will be heading off-trail into the forest three times: for Chimpanzees, Golden Monkeys, and the Mountain Gorillas.

  • The Chimpanzees: These can be the most active trek. Since chimps move quickly and often stay high in the trees, we may need to hike up and down hills and bushwhack through shrubbery to get a good look. Guides will use machetes to clear a path through vines and stinging nettles (protective gaiters are provided!).

  • The Mountain Gorillas: The duration is the “wildcard.” We are assigned our gorilla families on the morning of the trek. We always try to request families closer to the park boundary for our slower walkers, but you should still prepare for 1+ hours of hiking on muddy trails.

  • The Golden Monkeys: These playful primates are usually found near the forest edge (bamboo zone), so the hiking is generally shorter and less arduous than the other two—though still muddy!

The Bottom Line: Prepare for mud and a physical challenge—if it ends up being easy, consider it a bonus! But rest assured: our guides accommodate the pace of the group so no one is left behind, and the moment you see a Silverback, every ounce of effort vanishes.

IS RWANDA SAFE?

Absolutely. Rwanda is widely recognized as one of the safest, cleanest, and most organized countries in Africa.

  • Kigali: You will be amazed by the capital—often cited as the cleanest city on the continent—with its paved roads, manicured medians, and palpable sense of order.

  • The Security: Tourism is a national treasure here. We are accompanied by expert local guides at all times, and the National Parks are heavily guarded and monitored to ensure total safety for both guests and the animals.

  • The Neighborhood: While the region occasionally makes headlines due to instability in neighboring countries (such as the DRC or Burundi), it is important to note that this volatility rarely, if ever, spills over the border. Rwanda itself remains a beacon of stability and security.

THE SOS-FREE COMMITMENT

This trip is exclusively Whole Food Plant-Based and SOS-Free (No Salt, Oil, or Sugar), in partnership with the NHA.

  • For the NHA Follower: This is your dream vacation. You can finally travel without explaining your diet to waiters or worrying about hidden oils.

  • For the “Junk Food Vegan”: Please be aware that all group meals will be strictly compliant. While the food is gourmet and plentiful, there will be no deep-fried mock meats or oily sauces.

  • A Note on Condiments: For those who desire them, salt, oil, and sugar will be available on the side to add to your own plate—but rest assured, the kitchen will never cook with them.

Our World-Class Accommodations

For a trip of this magnitude, the accommodation must be as memorable as the wildlife. We have curated a selection of properties that offer the perfect balance of location, luxury, and comfort—including two One&Only resorts that are destinations in their own right.

Kigali Marriott Hotel (3 Nights Total) 2 Nights on Arrival | 1 Night on Departure: We begin and end our journey in the stylish comfort of the Kigali Marriott. Located just steps from the financial district and the Camp Kigali Belgian Monument, it offers the perfect base to acclimate to the “Land of a Thousand Hills.”

One&Only Nyungwe House (2 Nights) Nyungwe National Park: Set on the edge of the ancient rainforest on a working tea plantation, Nyungwe House is pure magic. We will spend 2 nights suspended in the canopy, surrounded by the sounds of the jungle. With its stunning infinity pool, cozy public spaces and immersive design, the challenge won’t be enjoying the activities—it will be prying yourself away from your breathtaking lodge.

Cleo Lake Kivu Hotel (1 Night) Karongi / Lake Kivu: To break up our journey, we stop at the spectacular Cleo Lake Kivu Hotel. Perched on a hillside overlooking the water, this 5-star boutique retreat offers a level of privacy and intimacy that larger hotels cannot match. With its “farm-to-table” culinary philosophy, private verandas, and sweeping views of the islands, it is the perfect serene interlude before we head to the volcanoes.

One&Only Gorilla’s Nest (3 Nights) Volcanoes National Park: For the grand finale, we check into one of the most exclusive resorts on Earth for 3 unforgettable nights. Itinerary

The itinerary below is there to serve as an example only, based on our previous trips to Rwanda.  An updated itinerary will be posted once our dates have been confirmed and the trip goes live for bookings.

DAY 1 - Arrival in Kigali

Today marks the beginning of your journey. Upon clearing customs at Kigali International Airport (KGL), you will be met by our private drivers and transferred to the Kigali Marriott, your urban sanctuary for the next two nights. Ideally situated in the heart of the city, it places you within walking distance of the financial district and the moving Camp Kigali Belgian Monument.

As you drive in, you will notice immediately that Kigali is unlike any other capital in Africa. It is pristine, organized, and remarkably clean—a testament to the country’s strict ban on plastic bags. (Note: Please ensure you are not carrying any plastic duty-free bags, as customs checks are thorough and they will be confiscated!)

Our expedition officially commences at 5:00 PM with a welcome meeting hosted by the NHA. We will toast the journey ahead with a glass of bubbly (or mocktail) before settling in for a spectacular Welcome Feast—our first taste of the gourmet SOS-free cuisine to come.

Please ensure you arrive early enough to clear immigration (approx. 1.5 hours) and freshen up before our 5:00 PM start. If you decide to fly in a few days early to combat jet lag, please let us know; we can book accommodation for you.

Accommodation: Kigali Marriott

Included:

airport pickup and transfer to your hotel

welcome meeting & drinks

dinner

non-premium drinks during dinner

all transportation once the trip begins

Excluded:

breakfast & lunch premium drinks

DAY 2 - Kigali & Genocide memorials

After a delicious NHA-compliant breakfast, we dedicate our morning to understanding the profound history of this resilient nation. Our journey takes us 30km south of Kigali to the Ntarama Genocide Memorial. This former church, where 5,000 people sought refuge, is now a solemn site of remembrance. Here, we will learn about the tragic events of 1994 and the inspiring work of the National Unity and Reconciliation Commission.

We continue to Nyamata, another church memorial where 2,500 people lost their lives. It stands as a poignant reminder of the specific atrocities committed against women during the genocide, offering a deep and necessary context to the country’s rebirth.

We return to Kigali in time for a specially prepared SOS-free lunch at a local restaurant.

The Afternoon: Curated for You The rest of the day is yours to curate. You may choose to rest, or we can arrange one of the following experiences:

  • Kigali Genocide Memorial: For those wishing to deepen their understanding, this world-class centre is highly recommended. (Note: If this feels too heavy for one day, we recommend visiting if you arrive a day early or stay a day late).

  • Nyamirambo Neighborhood Walk: Explore the vibrant, living heart of Kigali. This guided walk through the colorful Nyamirambo district is a fantastic way to meet locals and see the city’s modern spirit.

  • The Presidential Palace Museum: Visit the former home of President Habyarimana and see the remains of the presidential plane, whose crash sparked the 1994 events.

  • Art & Culture: Explore the city’s burgeoning art scene at various local galleries.

  • Recharge: Simply relax by the Marriott pool and recover from any lingering jet lag.

Dinner will be served at our hotel this evening, ensuring a restful night before our early departure tomorrow.

Accommodation: Kigali Marriott

DAY 3 - The Journey to Nyungwe

After an early breakfast, we pack up and depart for a scenic drive (approx. 6 hours) to Nyungwe National Park. While the journey is long, it is absolutely breathtaking. Winding through the endless green terraces, you will understand exactly why Rwanda is known as the Land of a Thousand Hills. The beauty of the landscape and the warmth of the communities we pass will stay with you forever.

Upon arrival, one look at our home for the next 2 nights, the One&Only Nyungwe House, will convince you that the drive was worth every mile. Set amidst a working tea plantation on the edge of the ancient rainforest, this lodge boasts one of the most stunning locations in the world.

After a welcome lunch, the afternoon is yours to settle in. You might explore the tea estate, take a dip in the infinity pool, book a holistic spa treatment, or simply relax in your sanctuary and listen to the sounds of the jungle.

DAY 4 – Chimpanzees

We rise at dawn for our first major wilderness encounter: the Chimpanzee Trek. After a fueling NHA-compliant breakfast, we head into the forest. To minimize our impact on the environment and ensure an intimate experience, we will divide into smaller groups for this excursion and visit 2 or 3 different Chimpanzee families.

Rwanda’s chimpanzee population, currently estimated at around 400 individuals, is endangered, making this encounter a rare privilege. While these intelligent primates—our closest relatives—are unpredictable and move rapidly through the canopy, our team of expert trackers leaves ahead of us to locate them and maximize our chances of a sighting.

The Trek: Nyungwe is the largest block of mountain forest in East and Central Africa. As we hike, keep your eyes peeled for a myriad of other monkey species and rare birds. Please note that this trek requires moderate stamina; be prepared for hiking up and down hillsides on uneven terrain.

The Afternoon: We return to the lodge for a well-earned lunch. The rest of the day is yours to design.

  • The Canopy Walk: For the adventurous, we highly recommend the famous Canopy Walk. Suspended 50 meters (165 ft) above the ground and spanning 150 meters (492 ft), this walkway offers a bird’s-eye view of the rainforest and a chance to spot wildlife in the upper canopy.

  • Nature Walks: explore the tea plantation or forest trails on foot.

  • Relaxation: Simply unwind at the infinity pool or on your private deck with a good book.

Dinner will be served at the lodge.

Accommodation: One&Only Nyungwe House

Included:

Chimpanzee tracking

several complimentary activities at our resort

breakfast, lunch & dinner

non-premium drinks during meals

all transportation

DAY 5 – The Serenity of Lake Kivu

After breakfast, we bid farewell to the rainforest and enjoy a scenic drive (approx. 2 hours) to the sparkling shores of Lake Kivu, one of Africa’s Great Lakes. Upon arrival at the boutique Cleo Lake Kivu Hotel, you might feel as though you have been transported to the Mediterranean.

We will settle in for a gourmet SOS-free lunch with panoramic views of the water.

The Afternoon Cruise: After lunch, we board our private boat for a relaxing 2-hour cruise. We will weave between the nearby islands, keeping an eye out for Vervet monkeys playing in the trees. For those who wish, there will be an opportunity to take a refreshing dip in the lake.

The rest of the afternoon is dedicated to pure relaxation. We have had some early mornings, and the gorilla trekking lies ahead, so this is the perfect moment to recharge your batteries while soaking in the stunning vistas from your private veranda.

DAY 6 – Umuganda & The Journey North

This morning offers a rare and profound privilege: we join Rwandans from all walks of life for Umuganda, the monthly mandatory community service day. Reborn as part of the country’s reconstruction after the genocide, this is a nationwide event where citizens—from farmers to the President—come together to clean streets, repair roads, or build schools. It is far from a chore; it is a celebration of unity, often filled with singing, dancing, and a near-party atmosphere. To participate alongside our hosts is an honor you will never forget.

After our community work and a hearty lunch, we begin our journey north (approx. 4 hours) to the One&Only Gorilla’s Nest. If you thought Nyungwe was impressive, wait until you see this! Nestled in a eucalyptus forest at the foot of the volcanoes, this 5-star sanctuary is the pinnacle of luxury. We arrive just in time to check-in, unpack, explore your huge room and gather for a delicious dinner, preparing for the adventures ahead.

Accommodation: One&Only Gorilla’s Nest

DAY 7 – Unwind & Preparation for the Gorillas

Today is designed for you to unwind and immerse yourself in the sanctuary of the One&Only Gorilla’s Nest. Whether you choose to explore or relax, the day is yours to curate.

Your Personal Sanctuary: Spending a few hours simply enjoying your suite is a highlight in itself! However, the resort offers several complimentary experiences, from guided nature walks to learn about the landscaping to mixology classes. The wellness facilities are world-class—take a dip in the infinity pool, brave the cold plunge, or relax in the sauna and steam room. (Massages and spa treatments are available at an additional cost and are highly recommended!)

VIP Conservation Access: In the afternoon, we head to the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund for a true VIP experience. After a guided tour of the permanent exhibit, we will step behind the curtain into the restricted research areas. You will see the education centers, the skeletal labs, and even the scatology labs where vital science takes place.

An Evening with the Gorilla Doctors: Just before dinner, we have a special privilege: a private talk by a Gorilla Doctor. These veterinary heroes are the only ones authorized to treat injured gorillas in the wild. You will learn about their life-saving work and the challenges they face. The doctor will then join us for dinner, answering your questions and ensuring you are perfectly prepared (and suitably excited!) for tomorrow’s big encounter.

DAY 8 - GORILLAS!

This is it. The big day. We will not lie: this is the highlight of the trip. It may well be the highlight of your life.

After an early breakfast, we head to the National Park headquarters to meet our guides. Here, we will be divided into small groups, and each group will be assigned one human-habituated gorilla family.

The Trek: while we can’t guarantee which family you will be assigned to, our driver’s relationship with the park staff (most of them are locals from the nearby town of Musanze!) ensures that we usually get easier/closer families.  But if you prefer a challenge, please let us know!

Still, it’s best to come prepared for a challenge. Some families require a short walk, while others demand a hike of up to six hours or more at altitude. We encourage you to expect the long haul—if your family is nearby, consider it a wonderful bonus! To ensure you can focus on the experience, we include a personal porter for every guest. They will carry your backpack and offer a helping hand on the slippery slopes, allowing you to focus on enjoying the magical surroundings of the Virunga volcanoes.

The Encounter: Tracking the gorillas through the misty forest is an experience in itself, but nothing can prepare you for the moment you spot them. Once we find our family, the clock starts. You are allowed exactly one hour with them.

Trust us, this is an hour you will never forget. You might see a mother grooming her baby, juveniles tumbling through the bushes, or a massive Silverback munching on wild celery just meters away. While we aim to keep a respectful distance, the gorillas do not always know the rules—do not be surprised if they move in for a closer look! You may find yourself staring into the deep, amber eyes of a long-lost cousin, sharing a silent moment of connection that transcends species.

The Celebration: We return to the lodge on an absolute emotional high. We will likely be muddy, tired, and completely awestruck. The afternoon is free for you to relax, edit your photos, or simply stare at the ceiling reliving the encounter.

In the evening, we gather for WVT’s tranditional celebratory We Just Saw Gorillas!! party and dinner to share our stories and toast to the day.  Our drivers and local friends are invited for a full day to remember!

Accommodation: One&Only Gorilla’s Nest

Included:

gorilla tracking permit

personal porter for the trek

breakfast, lunch & dinner

non-premium drinks during meals

all transportation

Excluded:

premium drinks

DAY 9 - Golden Monkeys & return to Kigali

The adventure is not over yet! This morning, we set off for one final trek in Volcanoes National Park, this time to find the rare Golden Monkeys.

The Trek: Unlike the gorillas, these playful primates inhabit the dense bamboo forests at the lower reaches of the park. We will weave through the bamboo glades to find a habituated troop. These monkeys are incredibly active and photogenic—the contrast of their gold fur against the green bamboo makes for stunning photography. You will spend one hour watching them frolic in plain view, feeding on bamboo shoots, leaping from perch to perch, and caring for their young. They are often completely comfortable among onlookers, offering a delightful and lighthearted finale to our wildlife encounters.

The Journey Back: We return to the lodge for a final lunch before packing up and bidding a fond farewell to the volcanoes. We then begin our drive back to Kigali (approx. 2.5 hours), watching the landscape shift from mist-covered mountains back to the vibrant city hills.

The Celebration: Upon arrival, we check back into the Kigali Marriott to freshen up. Then, we gather for our official Farewell Feast. This is the time to exchange photos, share contacts, and toast to the memories we have made together. It is our last night, so we will make it count!

FAQ

TOUR PRICE: UNDERSTANDING THE VALUE

The Investment: Understanding the Value

We believe in complete transparency. This expedition is an investment, designed for the traveler who demands the absolute pinnacle of comfort, access, and health without a single compromise.

Here is why this journey is worth every penny:

  • Conservation in Action (The Permits): The privilege of trekking with Mountain Gorillas is strictly regulated. The Rwanda Development Board charges a non-negotiable $1,500 USD per person for the gorilla trekking permit alone. This fee is included in your trip cost and goes directly into the conservation programs that saved these species from extinction. You are not just seeing the gorillas; you are helping to save them.

  • The World’s Most Exclusive Lodges: We are staying at One&Only Nyungwe House and One&Only Gorilla’s Nest for a total of 6 nights. These are not just hotels; they are world-class destinations. Public rates for these properties are significant, but they are integral to making this the “trip of a lifetime.”

  • A “Zero-Wallet” Experience: Unlike many other tours, we include the “hidden” costs that usually add up. We cover all tips for every driver, guide, and tracker (which is substantial), porters to carry your gear during treks, non-premium drinks, and even a few laundry days. Once you arrive, you can truly relax.

  • Privatized & Customized: We have privatized most of our meals and activities to ensure total control over the experience. This allows us to provide strictly compliant SOS-free cuisine in remote locations—a logistical feat that requires a dedicated, expert team.

  • The “One Shot” Philosophy: For many, this is the African adventure they have dreamed of for decades. We have designed this itinerary with the belief that if you are going to do it, you should do it right. We chose the best rooms, the best guides, and the best routes to ensure this memory is perfect.

CAN I SIGN UP AS A SOLO TRAVELER?

Yes – while we do accept solo travelers, please note that there is a hefty single supplement. We have a number of FAQ on the topic of solo travelers which you can read here.

FLIGHTS & VISAS

FLIGHTS
You are in charge of your own flights to and from Rwanda.  We ask that you try and arrive in KIGALI early on the 1st day at the very latest, so you can allow enough time to go through the immigration and baggage retrieval process and the drive to our hotel and still be able to freshen up and rest up a bit before our first meeting and welcome dinner.   We would estimate the time between landing and arriving at the hotel to be about 1.5hrs.  Our first meeting is usually in mid-afternoon.

Regardless of your arrival date, we will provide an airport pickup.

Please note that check-ins at our hotel are not guaranteed BEFORE 3PM.  We will try and have the hotel accommodate early arrivals, but it’s possible you will be asked to wait until a room becomes available.  We are situated right downtown, so worst case it’s nice and exciting to go and explore the neighborhood!

Our trip finishes up in KIGALI so book your return or ongoing flight from there.   You may also decide to stay in Rwanda or in the region a little longer, and if that’s the case let us know if we can help with your ongoing travel (ie accommodation, transportation, ideas, suggestions, etc).  We will be providing airport transfers on our final itinerary day only, until afternoon.

VISAS
All nationalities coming to Rwanda are now eligible for getting a visa on arrival.   The visa costs is $50 USD.   This is payable upon landing at Kigali airport.  Please have cash with you.

IS VACCINATION MANDATORY FOR ENTRY INTO RWANDA?

For the vast majority of travelers (including those arriving directly from the US, Canada, or Europe), there are no compulsory vaccinations required for entry into Rwanda.

The Yellow Fever Exception (Important): The only exception is for travelers arriving from, or who have transited through (for more than 12 hours), a country with a risk of Yellow Fever transmission. In this specific case, a Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate is required by border officials.

  • Common countries with Yellow Fever risk include: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador.

  • Note: If you are combining this trip with a safari in Kenya or Tanzania before arriving in Rwanda, you will likely need this certificate.

Standard Health Recommendations (Personal Choice) While not required by law, the CDC and WHO list the following vaccinations for travel to East Africa. We believe in informed consent and strictly recommend consulting with your personal physician or a holistic healthcare professional who knows your medical history. They can help you weigh the benefits and risks based on your personal health philosophy.

  • Commonly listed vaccinations: Typhoid, Hepatitis A & B, Polio, Cholera, Rabies, and Influenza.

  • Decision: Which, if any, of these you choose to receive is a decision between you and your healthcare provider.

Malaria Prevention Rwanda is a malaria zone, particularly in lower-altitude areas. Because we will be trekking in dense forests, exposure to mosquitoes is possible.

  • Physical Prevention: Your first line of defense is physical. We strongly suggest wearing long sleeves and trousers during the evenings and early mornings and using an effective insect repellent.

  • Medication: Many travelers choose to take prophylactic anti-malarial medication. As some of these medications can have side effects, please discuss the options (and natural alternatives, if that is your preference) with your health professional to find the best approach for you.

Medical Facilities & Preparedness Medical facilities are widely available in Rwanda, with the highest standard of care found in Kigali (King Faisal Hospital). However, specific prescription medications or specialized natural supplements may be difficult to source locally.

  • Action Item: Please ensure you bring a sufficient supply of any daily medications or supplements you require for the duration of the trip.

Disclaimer: World Vegan Travel creates itineraries, not medical plans. We are not medical professionals and cannot offer specific medical advice. We accept no responsibility for medical issues, denied entry, or costs resulting from a lack of vaccination or preventive care. The final decision on medical preparations rests solely with the traveler.

DO I NEED INSURANCE?

All travelers must have travel insurance that covers emergency medical treatment and emergency evacuation. It is also prudent to purchase insurance to cover trip cancelation, trip interruption and more. To learn more about buying insurance for a World Vegan Travel trip, read this blog post.

CAN YOU HELP WITH BOOKING OUR FLIGHTS AND ONGOING TRAVEL?

As we are not a travel agency or booking agents, we can’t book any flights or ongoing travel (ie hotels, transportation, etc) for you. However we can surely help with recommendations, suggestions and tips as you look into flights, or extending your holiday. It never hurts to ask, so don’t hesitate to contact us with any queries whatsoever!

WHAT WILL THE WEATHER BE LIKE?

Short Answer: Pleasant, lush, and changeable. Late November falls during Rwanda’s “short rainy season.” This is actually a beautiful time to visit because the country lives up to its name as the “Green Heart of Africa”—the landscapes will be vibrant, dust-free, and incredibly photogenic.

  • The Temperature: Rwanda is close to the equator, so it never gets freezing, but altitude changes everything.

    • Kigali & Lake Kivu: Expect warm, tropical days with highs around 25°C–28°C (77°F–82°F) and comfortable evenings.

    • The Mountains (Nyungwe & Volcanoes): It gets significantly cooler here, especially at night and early morning. Expect highs of 15°C–20°C (59°F–68°F) and lows that can dip to 10°C (50°F). You will definitely want a fleece or sweater for the evenings!

  • The Rain: Expect some rain, but usually in short, heavy bursts rather than all-day drizzles. The mornings often start clear for trekking, with showers rolling in during the afternoon.

  • The Mud: Because of the season, the forest trails will likely be muddy. We highly recommend bringing waterproof hiking boots and gaiters (to protect your ankles from mud and stinging nettles). A lightweight rain poncho is also essential—and don’t worry, the gorillas don’t mind the rain!

WHAT SHOULD I PACK?

Don’t worry, we will send a comprehensive packing list in your Trip Information Document closer to departure.

For now, here are the “Non-Negotiables” to keep in mind:

  • The Trekking Gear: Waterproof hiking boots (make sure they are broken in!), tall gaiters (to keep ants out), and a pair of sturdy gardening gloves (to protect your hands from stinging nettles).

  • The Clothing: Think “layers.” Days can be warm, but mornings and evenings in the mountains are chilly. A warm fleece or light down jacket is essential.

  • The Rain: A lightweight, breathable rain jacket or poncho.

  • The Colors: For trekking, stick to neutral earth tones (khaki, green, brown). Avoid bright blue or black, which can attract tsetse flies.

WILL THERE BE INTERNET ACCESS DURING THE TRIP?

Our hotels all have internet, and we will have WIFI in the vehicles.  Do note that the connection in the latter may be spotty at times.

HOW MUCH MONEY SHOULD I BRING?

For the most part, this is an all-inclusive trip.  We provide all accommodation, transportation, activities, meals and drinks.  You will only need cash for extra purchases such as souvenirs, spas, optional activities and extra drinks outside of what’s included.  There are ATMs in the big cities.  For us, this means Kigali and any town we hit while traveling from location to location, but not so much in the areas where we stay the night.   If you are in need of an ATM, please let your tour leader know so they can plan a stop.

Outside of Kigali, you should expect minimal chances to use your credit cards (mostly visas and MasterCard.  Best to forget about American Express).

The tour leaders will be carrying extra cash.  If you decide to go on an optional activity at the last minute but don’t have enough money, we will be able to help you out and you can simply pay us back when we find an ATM.

During meals: we will provide non-premium drinks (soda, wine, beer, coffee, tea).   Any premium drinks on top of what’s provided will require you to pay the suppliers (ie hotel, restaurant) directly.   We will make it very clear how much is included before each meal.

We also include tips for all our activities.  For all optional activities, you should budget tips around 5$-10$ per person.  This is the way in Africa.

Tipping hotel and restaurant staff is not necessary and entirely up to you.  If you like to tip service staff, please bring some extra US cash.

I HAVE A DIETARY RESTRICTION (ALLERGIES, GLUTEN-FREE, ETC)

If you have any specific dietary needs or food preferences, we kindly ask you to contact Brighde at [email protected] before finalizing your booking. Please provide her with detailed information about your dietary needs or preferences, and ensure you receive a written response from Brighde before finalizing your trip booking. Your cooperation and understanding in this matter are greatly appreciated.

Please note that any additional requests made after the booking has been completed might not be able to be accommodated.

HOW MUCH PHYSICAL ACTIVITY CAN I EXPECT?

This trip does include at least 2 days of heavy hiking (gorillas and chimpanzees) so you WILL need to be physically fit enough for these undertakings.  You don’t need to be the fittest person on your block, but you should be ready to hike up and down hills in a wet and hot jungle for several hours, on two occasions.  So while you can certainly skip those two activities (or one of them), we feel your overall enjoyment will be hindered a bit as they are definitely the highlight of the trip!

It’s important to note that for these 2 activities, we will be hiring local porters that can help you not only with carrying your bag, but hold your hand during tricky parts and generally do everything they can to get you to the chimps and gorillas. You will also have the option to use a walking stick, which everyone is always glad to have — regardless of their fitness level or hiking expertise

For gorillas: if you have an ailment or a bit of a hard time with long hikes, we can ask the National Park to assign a gorilla family that isn’t too far off into the mountain.  However, while in the past our requests have been honored, there is simply no guarantee that they will or can do so this time.  For the chimpanzees, they live deep in the bush and up trees, so there’s no way out of having to run up and down thick jungle to see/find them.

IS THERE AN AGE LIMIT TO JOIN THE TRIP?

Youth above 16 years young are welcome.    We are currently not accepting any younger children.

There’s no upper age limit, though do note that there is a fair amount of walking on this trip.

WHAT LANGUAGES DO THEY SPEAK IN RWANDA?

English and French are both official languages, and many residents (particularly in urban areas) will speak one or the other in addition to Kinyarwanda. In practice though, English is by far more popular, with the number of french-speakers decreasing, except perhaps near the borders with the Democratic Republic of Congo (where French is the official language) or by DRC expats.

Everyone in the tourist trade, as well as most young people, will speak ENGLISH while the older population may speak at least a bit of English (and a lot of French).

Kinyarwanda is the chief spoken language in Rwanda. It is also spoken in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo and in the south of Uganda (Bufumbira-area). Kinyarwanda is a language of the Bantu linguistic family. It is closely related to Kirundi spoken in the neighboring country Burundi and to Giha of western Tanzania.   Still, English remains the language of business and trade, hence its popularity and fluency across the country.

LGBTQ TRAVELLERS

World Vegan Travel and National Health Association Trips aim to be a safe place for all LGBTQ travelers. We have a zero-tolerance policy on discrimination of any sort.

Overall, travel to Rwanda for the LGBTQ community is safe. As a visitor to Rwanda, your sexual preferences and identity are your private business, and are generally of no interest to others. Rwandans tend to be very welcoming to all tourists, regardless of their sexual orientation.

That said, openly amorous behavior, for both hetero- and homosexual couples, can cause offence, especially in rural areas, so we’d still advise all our travelers to be cautious, regardless of sexual orientation. In general, we’d suggest that you stick to a “don’t ask, don’t tell” approach while travelling.

While same-sex marriage remains illegal, there are no laws against homosexual behavior (unlike neighboring Uganda).    Since debating the issue in 2009, Rwanda has pushed ahead to progress human rights for its LGBTQ citizens.  In the region, Rwanda is therefore known as something of a haven for LGBTQ citizens alienated from neighboring countries.

In 2011, the Rwanda government signed the UN statement condemning violence against LGBT people, joining a further nine African countries in supporting LGBT rights. Then, in 2016, President Paul Kagame delivered an outspoken address stating that living as an LGBT citizen in Rwanda “…hasn’t been our problem. And we don’t intend to make it our problem”.
