Italy

Why we love Italy

Italy is one of the world’s favourite travel destination and it is easy to see why.  Simply mentioning the piazzas of Rome, Milan’s Duomo, the canals of Venice and the architectural wonders of Florence is enough to send everyone dreaming of their next Italian escapade.

Then there’s the veritable abundance of world class museums, the remarkably intact roman town of Pompeii, the hill-towns of Umbria, the quaint seaside towns of the Cinqueterre, the cliff-hugging villages along the Amalfi Coast, the list goes on and on and on!

Not to be outdone, Italy’s nature is out of this world.  From the rolling hills of Tuscany to the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean, and from the high snow-capped peaks of the Dolomites to the smoking volcanos of Sicily, Italy truly has it all.

Throughout, the Italians themselves provide ample texture and color to this perfect synergy of gorgeous scenery, architecture, history and culture.   Is there any other language in the world where you can understand most of what a local is saying without actually speaking a word of it?!?

Finally, there’s the food, which needs no introduction.   Pasta, pizzas, bruschetta,  tiramisu, it’s all incredibly varied, fresh and always amazingly delicious, and there’s no question Italian cuisine is one of the most popular in the world.  And of course, it always taste that much better with some good local wine, from Chianti to Sangiovese to Montepulciano, to wash it down!

So come explore this amazing country with us and get ready to wake up to strong aromatic coffee, wander the cobblestone alleyways, feast on a long lazy lunch, sit in a piazza, pop into a museum or two, sip the local wine, and soak in this incredible country, one pizza at a time!

  • listen to people speak – Italian is so beautiful!
  • Italy is the home of 55 UNESCO world heritage sights (tied with China!) – 50 are cultural and 5 are natural.
  • There’s been a recent increase of some beautiful vegan hotels and animal sanctuaries!

Did you know...

  • Gelato: ice-cream is an Italian invention and you can enjoy it vegan as more and more places offer a few options.
  • Most young Italians learn to speak English, French or German at school.
  • In the Alps you will very likely see the marmots, which make a very high pitched calling sound.
  • Italy was a kingdom until 1946.
  • Rome, the capital, is often called ”The Eternal City”.  With 3.57 million inhabitants, it is Italy’s biggest city.
  • Not all people in Italy speak proper Italian, but actually one of its many dialects.  Some of the older people can’t even speak Italian!   Others, for example in th Dolomites region, can speak only a bit of Italian, preferring instead their native German, while in the Valle d’Aosta you’re more likely to hear French.
