Why a Kinyarwanda Language Guide Matters for Vegan Travelers

Rwanda is a beautiful country known for its stunning wildlife. Here you can meet gorillas, golden monkeys, and chimpanzees, as well as spot the Big Five on safari at Akagera National Park — one of the country’s most treasured reserves. While restaurant menus in Rwanda may not always have extensive vegan choices, the staff are incredibly accommodating and will often go out of their way to find or prepare something vegan for you.

Rwanda is also a world leader in sustainability. The country banned plastic bags back in 2007 and holds a monthly community clean-up that everyone participates in — even the President! This focus on reducing waste makes Rwanda an inspiring destination for eco-minded vegan travelers.

Most Rwandans you’ll meet in restaurants and shops speak very good English. It’s one of the official languages of Rwanda and is now spoken more widely than French. Still, when your request is a little different — like asking to “veganize” a dish — showing a written phrase in Kinyarwanda can really help.
